Mechanical characterization of polymers on a nanoscale through AFM nanoindentation: A theoretical study on the time-dependent viscoelastic recovery
نویسندگان
چکیده
The temperature-dependent indent recovery of polymer materials was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). A numerical model based on the Boussinesq equations was developed to simulate the viscoelastic indent recovery. Viscoelastic solution of stress and displacement is obtained by using the corresponding principle between elasticity and viscoelasticity. The numerical solution provides results that illustrate the influence of the loading conditions, elastic modulus and viscosity of the materials on the recovery rate of indentation. It provides a sound basis for prediction of deformation recovery on the polymer surface.

Dynamic mechanical spectroscopy (DMS), which allows measuring frequency-dependent viscoelastic properties, is important to study soft materials, tissues, biomaterials, polymers. However, the existing DMS techniques (nanoindentation) have limited resolution when used on soft materials, preventing them from being used to study mechanics at the nanoscale. The nanoindenters are not capable of measu...

Nanoindentation has recently gained attention as a characterization technique for mechanical properties of biological tissues, such as bone, on the sub-micron level. However, optimal methods to characterize viscoelastic properties of bones are yet to be established. This study aimed to compare the time-dependent viscoelastic properties of bone tissue obtained with different nanoindentation meth...
متن کاملCharacterization of Viscoelastic Properties of Polymeric Materials through Nanoindentation
Nanoindentation is used to determine the dynamic viscoelastic properties of six polymer materials. It is shown that varying the harmonic frequency of the nanoindentation does not have any significant effect on the measured storage and loss moduli of the polymers. Agreement is found between these results and data from DMA testing of the same materials. Varying the harmonic amplitude of the nanoi...
